Engagement Ring Buying Guide: Everything You Need to Know Before You Buy

Engagement Ring Buying Guide: Everything You Need to Know Before You Buy

Buying an engagement ring does not have to be overwhelming. Here is everything that matters — kept simple.

Start With the Metal

Choose the band before you choose the stone. The metal determines durability, color, and how the ring wears over years of daily use.

  • 14K gold — the most practical. Durable, warm in color, ideal for everyday wear

  • 18K gold — richer color, softer feel. The classic fine jewelry standard

  • 22K gold — deep, intense yellow. Valued for its color and investment character

  • 24K gold — pure gold. Softest metal, deepest tone. Best for ceremonial pieces

  • Platinum — the most durable. Develops a natural patina. Built to last generations

At Élyséa, every gold purity is available — the choice is always yours.

Understand the Four Cs

These four criteria determine a diamond's quality and price. Know them before you walk in anywhere.

  • Cut — the most important factor. Cut determines how the stone catches light. Always prioritize this above everything else

  • Color — graded D (colorless) to Z (visibly yellow). D–H is the practical range for most buyers

  • Clarity — the presence of internal inclusions. VS2 or SI1 is the sweet spot — clean to the naked eye, sensibly priced

  • Carat — the weight, not the size. A well-cut smaller stone will always outshine a larger stone cut poorly

Always Ask for a Laboratory Certificate

Every diamond should come with a certificate from either:

  • GIA — Gemological Institute of America — the global standard

  • IGI — International Gemological Institute — widely accepted, especially for lab-grown diamonds

The certificate includes the stone's cut, color, clarity, carat, and a unique report number you can verify yourself on gia.edu or igi.org. It will also clearly state whether the diamond is natural or lab-grown.

No certificate from a recognized lab? Do not assume the grade. Ask for one — or walk away.

Choose the Right Setting

Prong — classic, maximizes light into the stone. Inspect prongs annually

  • Bezel — stone encircled in metal. Most secure, lowest maintenance. Great for active lifestyles

  • Pavé or halo — smaller stones surround the center stone, adding brilliance and perceived size

  • Tension — stone appears to float between the band. Striking and modern
